The ASUS VY279HE is a 27-inch IPS monitor that checks most of the boxes people might be looking for in a new monitor right now. It offers some gaming extra perks, like 1ms response time and AMD FreeSync support, but otherwise stacks up a fairly simple display that bests in all three specs: size, resolution and price.
At its price, the VY279HE is much cheaper than many frameless 27-inch monitors, even smaller ones. For instance, the HP 24mh can be had for almost the same price, but comes with a 24-inch display, while the Asus TUF VG27AQ1A costs early twice as much. The LG 34WN80C-B may be a stronger competition with a bigger screen and a few specs higher, but its costs a lot more.
On looks, the Asus VY279HE is styled like a premium monitor, with a dark grey finish, an ultra-thin bezel, an easy-to-assemble stand with a V-shaped base. For a 27-inch display, the base plate is actually quite small so it doesn’t take up much space on your desk, but obviously the panel needs some room to move.
You need viewing space too, but not as much as would have been the case without this monitor’s screen very effective anti-reflective coating. But it looks great with a 27-inch display, if you’ve been using something smaller. And the full HD (1080p) resolution is arguably the ‘sweet spot’ in terms of the crisp2 color reproduction of fine detailing and legibility of smaller text.
Port selection is typical of budget monitors. The monitor gets HDMI, VGA and headphone jack, around the back, facing downwards. There are also standard VESA ports, in case you need to hook the monitor to a stand or a wall. It doesn’t include a USB port or a DisplayPort, but at this price, those are some features that are easy to overlook.
As with other Asus business monitors, the VY279HE’s display is an IPS panel with LED backlighting. It has a display area of 597.888 x 336.312 mm which, with the FHD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, gives pixel pitch of 0.311mm. It has 250cd/m2 peak brightness and 1000:1 contrast ration and 16.7m colors, resulting in smoother grading and tonal gradations. In-Plane Switching enables a fast response time and a wide viewing angle of 178 degrees.
The ASUS VY279HE is easy to use – it arrives ready-assembled. The on-screen display is large, fast and well-organized, with all the appropriate options. Another bit of Asus-developed technology is at work here and it’s called, ‘color augmentation technology’, it works fine by fine-tuning both the color and brightness of the monitor’s sub-regions across the panel to minimize color shifts.
For gamers, the Asus VY279HE comes complete with AMD’s FreeSync adaptive syncing technology. As such, if you’ll be using it with, maybe, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 powered machine, it will have no problem recognizing the Asus VY279HE and enabling the equivalent G-Sync functionality.
Overall, the 1080p resolution makes for plenty of detail on a 27-inch panel, the build quality is great and if bezel-less screen is your poison, you get a frameless design, which offers a good viewing experience.
There’s still some good arguments for using HD/QHD res monitors for business, college and photo editing, but FHD combined with an expanded color space reproduction represents a big step up in terms of more accurate rendering with finer tolerances.
Asus builds on this with the 27-inch Asus Y279HE with improved uniformity of both color, brightness and design – and across a big display area too – plus the very effective AMD FreeSync. It also offers excellent repeatedly and reliability via color augmentation, and the short 1ms response rate makes it a perfect choice for enthusiast gamers.
