Chromebooks like the Acer Chromebook 14 now rule supreme in the budget laptop category, but tablet PCs can get super affordable, too. The Teclast A78T is one such tablet PC, that seeks to offer the best of both worlds, especially those looking for a cheap alternative that simply gets the job done.

While it comes at a very low price, its spec sheet doesn’t look the part, not when you have affordable alternatives with better performance. Nonetheless, if you want the absolute basic performance, the A78T easily fits that role.

What we like about the Teclast A78T

For those shopping on a tight budget, this looks like a decent choice, but that doesn’t make it the best choice around. You have a horde of alternatives in the budget tablet category, including our Editors’ Choice the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, but you will definitely spend a little more.

Very lightweight for daily use

At 0.4 inches wide and weighing just over 250 grams, this tablet is slim and light to carry around on daily commute. Its 7-inch display comes with a 1024 x 600-pixel resolution, and has a TN IPS 5-point touchscreen. Battery life is quite lean, at only 2000mAh capacity, will should last for around 5 hours and 24 minutes on continuous video playback.

Seamlessly expandable memory

The A78T comes with 512MB DDR3 RAM that’s just enough to fire the tablet’s features and other interactions. Also included is 8GB ROM of expandable storage, that you can expand to 128GB via an SD card, should you need more space to store your videos, music, photos and other data. As for the 512MB RAM, that’s on the lower end, we expected at least 1GB for butter-smooth performance.

What we don’t like

Camera is horrible. In keeping the price downright low, Teclast used a single 0.3MP front camera, that shoots poor quality photos and videos. In short, this is not a tablet you’d want to carry around in anticipation of capturing those important moments. As if that’s not bad enough, it doesn’t include a back camera. That’s the much you need to sacrifice in order to hit the low price.

Bottom Line

The Teclast A78T is a 7-inch budget tablet that does very little to even justify the inexpensive price point. Of course, it does have all the basic that you’d need in an affordable tablet, but things like a horrible camera and lack of a rear-cameras well as low RAM keep it from standing out. If you must have a budget tablet, alternatives like the All-new Fire HD 10 and Lenovo Smart Tab M10 are worth having at the very top of your shopping list.
